In the next article from the "Expert advises" series, we want to introduce you to the most important issues related to planning the purchase of a swimming pool roofing and what elements should be considered before we decide on ordering and installing the roofing. This practical guide will guide you safely through the entire process of preparing for the roof and helps you plan the entire investment.
Low, medium or high roofing?
This is the most frequently asked question by customers. We basically start our work with the client from this question, i.e. from the right choice of solution for him. Of course, there are many additional questions such as the functionality assumed by the customer to get by buying a roof and how and when he will use it, but ...
Well, dear ladies, it generally looks like that if you do not want to swim under a closed roof and do not want to cover the garden with a high roof, it is worth choosing the lowest models.
In financial terms (which customers perceive completely differently when analyzing the roofing offer), low roofs with simple shapes comparing the price to medium roofs are more expensive, the price of simple low roofs in relation to medium and high "arched" roofs is higher.
Generally, arched roofs are cheaper, simply easier to manufacture and require less technological processes - this must be remembered. Always arc models will be more resistant to snow, wind pressure and suction, extreme weather conditions and cheaper than simple low roofs because they do not require welding, joining profiles and many other structural elements and technological processes, which often surprises customers.
If we want to swim under a closed roof, we can do it from the middle line, and very comfortably like in the mini Aquapark we can do it in the line of high pool roofing. An interesting solution is also a solution with one high segment and the next low, then we combine the functionality of a high roofing and an attractive low price.
The question we ask our clients is:
do you only care about protecting the pool from pollution, accidental falling into the water of children and kids, saving on pool chemistry or do you want to be able to swim comfortably under a closed roof during inclement weather? In what time perspective will you use your pool?
in fact, the client's answer to these questions means that we can offer him a specific roofing model. It remains for us to decide if the choice falls on medium or high lines only issues if the client would like to have walls on the sides straight, arched, and maybe irregular shape, but more on that later ...
And now from another barrel ...
The visual perspective is important, but usability is even more important.
Have you ever wondered what winds are in your area?
Are there hurricanes?
Is the roof location a holiday home where you are occasionally? Is the home of everyday life?
What about snow? What precipitation does occur at the location?
Or maybe buying a roof is an investment for a restaurant, hotel or holiday resort?
Roofing should always be matched to the location and its conditions, the needs and functional scope of customers and to the environment - this is the first thing.
Secondly, the choice of model for the location conditions.
Perhaps you will be surprised that the arc models always carry wind and snow loads better than models with simple shapes.
Lower models are more resistant to extreme weather conditions, because they put less resistance than high roofs. Everything can be remedied by using a suitably reinforced construction profile or by using fixed and telescopic segments put together. One thing is important, you should think about it now and properly address it by choosing the right construction solution safe and durable!
This is one of the most important elements of the investment, you can say the key to success and peace for years. The stabilization of the roof indicates how easy the roof segments will move. From the perspective of a few years 5, 10 use of the roof, definitely the element which is the appropriate foundations for the guides well made in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and in accordance with the art of construction for a given freezing zone will be a key element for the entire investment. A well-made foundation stabilizes the entire structure and causes the segments to move properly even after many years, and the roof will not settle. It is worth paying attention to this topic already at the stage of construction of the pool, and if possible even before planning the pool. The worst thing that can happen is the collapsing foundations or the shallow pouring of the foundation, or the compacted subsoil. The condition of the proper functioning of the structure is a properly prepared subgrade.
Roofing guides should ideally be mounted only on an even surface, leveled along the entire length and width, hardened and protected against the possibility of shifting of finishing materials under the weight of the roofing. The previously hardened and secured floor should be prepared before installing the roofing:
Paving stones or pavement tiles should be finished with a curb embedded in the ground to prevent them from sliding under the weight of the roof.
If the ground is not hardened, prepare reinforced foundations embedded in the ground for a minimum of 30 cm, laid on a 10 cm layer of gravel. The foundations should be level and parallel to each other and to the edge of the pool. The width and length of the foundations correspond to the width and length of the guide +/- 5cm on each side. The distance between them is determined by the width of the roof - the width of the smallest segment.
The surface is best finished with ceramics or a concrete slab or a suitable quality composite-terrace board, a wooden board from the perspective of the pool chemistry environment related to water and the effect of drying out under the influence of the sun on hot days seems to be the worst solution because it requires expensive maintenance. Do not place the ceramics directly next to the guides laid on the concrete foundation, at the same level, as this may result in water leaking under the ceramic tiles.
We should also remember to prepare the appropriate slope on the ground, preferably one way along the guides at the level of about 2cm, 3cm along the pool and guides. This will ensure that the water drains freely. Never make a fall from the outside pool!
When planning the construction of the pool itself, it is worth choosing the right pool surrounding surface adapted to the roofing system. Aesthetics are very important, but please remember about usability and now consider whether it is worth thinking about a non-slip system?
A few more words about the ground ...
Please remember to warm up the substrate in hot summer. A dark terrace board and black tiles, for example, will heat up more than light floor colors.
And now the specifics ...
If you dream of a roofing model without guides, it is better to choose a straight base, e.g. a flat tile without concrete, or a concrete slab or terrace board. Please remember to use edge stone so that dirty water does not pour into the pool during heavy rains.

if we want to have the guides hidden below the level, remember to ensure the outflow of water, dirt from the guides from the front of the guides. The guides must not be built in from their foreheads, as dirt, dust and dirt will not get out. Please remember, however, that hiding the guides below the level causes them to accumulate dust and dirt, and in general we do not recommend this option because it negatively affects the quality of moving the segments, and in the later period of use may cause damage to the tandems.
It is worth thinking about it earlier, as our roofing should park outside the pool. We have several options. The most popular way is to extend the guides by a width of one segment, then the roof will park on top of the pool. In this situation and configuration of the extension of the guides, one side of the pool is useless, because there is a whole folded roof. In turn, in Scandinavia, customers do this by ordering extension of the guides by a segment width + 1m minimum, then we can walk around the entire pool around. This solution seems optimal when we have a place in the garden, because it is not always such a place we can optimize the extension to the space in the garden intended for parking the roof outside the pool. I advise against using the extension of the guides due to the fact that the folded roof will be above the pool preventing us from using the entire pool except for high models with an additional tilting element.
This is probably the most extensive issue and for each of you it will be a different choice dictated by your own utility plan and installation options, or the type of pool you own and its configuration. The functionality of the roof is a very important element of the decision, because the details mean that the roof is adapted to the needs of their users. Additional tilting elements e.g. to bypass ladders, sliding or tilting flaps to level unevenness in the field and eliminate collisions on the object, e.g. with protruding elements of water technique, appropriate rubbers, gaskets, sliding windows for ventilation, passive ventilation for evaporation of water condensation, mosquito nets doors or tilting elements, so that insects do not get inside in the evenings, securing key segments so that unauthorized persons do not get into the pool and many other elements and accessories that, when properly used, give the roof a truly functional name.
Let's try to discuss the most important elements step by step.
This is a very important element of the roof, if we chose the medium or high model that allows swimming in a closed roof. The most frequently located doors are in the side roof top segment or in the front wall. It is worth thinking about whether we should use mosquito nets for doors, when in hot summer we want to ventilate the roof or bathe in the evening where insects become very bothersome especially in the evening. Here, I recommend you make a functional plan and see how you can enter the roof as quickly as possible and think about the location of the door in relation to the pool and garden infrastructure. Because we have many options for configuring the door, the best solution is to discuss with the family and pool users how we want to get to the pool, from which side and how and in which direction to fold the roof.
Extremely important roofing parameter affecting functionality and purchasing budget. Note there is no golden mean and therefore we need to make a short summary.

MINUS - Low impact strength, hail grains over 1 cm will pierce the delicate chambers of this material

MINUS is chamber growth and evaporation
MINUS is definitely more difficult to maintain cleanliness, especially in the conditions of the garden, trees, mowing the grass, because the chambers will be overgrown
MINUS - the chambers evaporate which is not visually attractive but is a feature of this material
A very important element is the adaptation of the roof to the prevailing pool infrastructure. If we are at the stage of designing the pool and adapting the roofing to the pool and the conditions there, it is the best time to think about it. There are many solutions at your disposal, such as tilting thresholds, tilting elements, sliding elements, tilting and sliding doors, which should be adapted to the roof model of its functionality and pool infrastructure.
I recommend that the roofing be equipped with so-called Central key. This gives you absolute certainty that no one will be called to enter the roof during our absence. This also in the case when we have small children gives us confidence that no one will fall into the water. Not very popular in Poland, in Western Europe it is the norm to equip the roof with a passive ventilation system, which enables e.g. evaporation of water condensation from polycarbonate. Here, it is also worth considering the ALUNA® Micro & Clima active ventilation system or simply hinged elements such as hinged flaps or the ALUNA® Click + Clack system for roof ventilation on hot days, when steam compensation becomes burdensome.
Roofing with an automatic roof segment moving system is becoming more and more popular among customers today. We service the roof with a comfortable remote control. The question is whether we need it, but we should remember that it is worth thinking about it when ordering a product. Most manufacturers do not have the option of adding engines after the roof has been manufactured, and even if it is possible it is much more expensive to adjust the segments for automatic shifting than the order during the roof production phase.
The best recommendation is that the roof color should be adapted to the surroundings. Certainly in such a color that roofing does not become a "foreign" object in the garden. Often, a general recommendation for a customer is to consider a roof color that matches the color of the window joinery, gates, roller blinds or blinds. It is also worth considering the issues of maintaining cleanliness on darker colors, dust and dust are less visible, which after many years of use will be important.
Today we have at your disposal many elements such as infrared heating, active heating, air conditioning, air driers. These are not popular solutions in Poland, but it is worth considering and thinking about whether to equip your roof with heating to extend the bathing season.
